Salsa term: Bachata (Style of music)
Rhythm and dance from the Dominican Republic. It arises from the »Bolero. The word Bachata means something like courtyard or courtyard party, because they played this music at the parties in the courtyards only with a guitar and a singer. Bachata was seen as music from the lower class of population. This music became more popular and was played also in the clubs in the late eighties and early nineties. Bachata was spread all over the country because of a cult radio station in the Dominican Republic: without radio Guarachita the Bachata would never came out of the underdog-status.
